Doctors of Nursing Practice

Does your university have different doctoral gradation gowns for graduates of practice doctorates ( eg law, medicine, nursing) than for graduates of research doctorates; or do they wear the same gown?  I am referencing the color of the gown and any design on the gown, not the color of the sleeve stripes or the hood.  Any input would be useful.  I am trying to compile some data.  many thanks in advance for data. barb- chairperson, DNP program at Duke

Barbara,

Here is picture of my DNP graduation.  I think most schools use same colors, should have some option for your cap.

There is a specific universal color for DNP (kind of a salmon color, similar to engineering I think) then the Univerisity you graduate from has its own colors.  PhD is a different color, as are other doctoral degrees.  Jan

Hi Barb-

when I was looking at options for my own DNP regalia I checked out a number of options as well as the history and traditions of regalia and commencement. Your question is about the gown color, its design (and maybe insignias?) and not about cowls and hoods which have very specific (and rigid) criteria. Gown design and color appears to be school specific, so you would have to get Duke admin approval to do anything other than basic black. You could likely get approval to add a school of nursing insignia b/c that doesn't require other Duke graduates to do that. You could possibly get approval to add school colors to the robe in addition to the hood, but then that would have to be an option for all Duke doctoral grads, and other schools at Duke might agree or object. I suggest you talk with other doctoral programs there and get some consensus, then go forward with that proposal to admin.

I graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and our academic regalia including the gown that is worn by all doctorate students (it is green and black with the UAB patch on both sides of the chest), plus apricot which is the color for nursing, and a tam (not morter board which is used for master's prepared). In total about $600, but I wear it when I perform hoodings and attend graduations, as my practice is in an academic medical center where I am a clinician/teacher. In this picture I am the giant size one in green and black.

Thanks to all. Right now the PhD graduates from Duke wear the Duke blue gown with a duke emblem while the practice doctorates (law, medicine, nursing, divinity etc) wear a black gown with no emblem thus I was trying to find out if any other university differentiates the PhD gown from the practice doctorate gown with respect to color of the gown and any insignia.  So far Vanderbilt is the only one reported. You all have been most helpful and I am appreciative. barb
Ours has something different for each doctoral degree.  PhD's one color, Law another, Medicine another, and DNP.....a lovely apricot.
My University uses the same color gown for all doctoral students.  The only distiguishing feature is the color of the stripes, that includes the Tam
